TO THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE ACADEMICIAN OF THE NAS OF UKRAINE VALERII MYKOLAYOVYCH YEREMEYEV

The article is dedicated to the memory of the outstanding national oceanologist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical sciences, professor, honored worker of science and technology of Ukraine Valerii Mykolayovych Yeremeyev. The life way, multifaceted scientific, organizational and social activity of the scientist is highlighted. During half a century the fate of V.M. Yeremeyev was associated with Sevastopol, namely with the Marine Hydrophysical Institute (MHI) and later with the O.O. Kovalevskoho Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (IBSS). At MHI he passed an excellent school of scientific management with two major organizers of the national science, prominent scientists, academicians of the USSR Academy of Sciences A.G. Kolesnikov and B.О. Nieliepo. The history of his career is briefly outlined. At the age of 33, he was confirmed as the scientific secretary of the Institute, and then worked for another five years (1980—1985) as deputy director for scientific work, and at the age of 43 he headed the Institute In 1999, at the initiative of B.E. Paton, President of NAS of Ukraine, V.M. Yeremieiev was entrusted as a director to solve the accumulated problems at the Institute for IBSS. Later IBSS became one of leaders in international cooperation among the institutes of the Department of General Biology NAS of Ukraine.

V.M. Yeremieiev’s scientific interests included experimental and nuclear hydrophysics, geophysical hydrodynamics, hydrochemistry and biogeochemistry of the ocean, informatics, and marine ecology. He laid the scientific foundation for the further development of isotope oceanography and made a significant contribution to the development of marine information technology. V.M. Yeremeyev has a strategic, truly revolutionary idea of integrated interdisciplinary Black Sea observation system creation, the concept of mainstream development of chemical and operational oceanography. The theoretical foundations, methods, and tools of the global oceanographic observation system, developed under his leadership, have formed the basis of the relevant programs of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.

Keywords: V.M. Yeremeyev, scholar’s life history, oceanography, operational oceanology, marine program, Azov-Black Sea basin.
